Martin Tsang shopping complex in the centre of Madang town was razed to the ground by fire last Saturday afternoon.  A huge crowd of onlookers, majority of them opportunists looking for an opportunity to steal, watched as the blaze devour the wholesale, cash & carry, supermarket, offices and the residence of the workers. Madang Fire Station’s lone fire engine battled in vain to save the buildings but in the end succeeded in stopping the flames from spreading to adjacent properties. Police confirmed that a looter was killed in the blaze. After the fire, looters scavenged the burnt out bottle shop and consumed litres of beer and spirits that have been ‘boiled’ by the inferno, while others carted away bags of half burnt groceries and anything they could retrieve.
